WHAT IS YOUR DREAM?
Author Joan Nakagwe
It’s a simple question, yet for many of us, it can be one of the most difficult to answer. We're often so caught up in the day-to-day routine—the endless to-do lists, the demands of work, the responsibilities of life—that we forget to ask ourselves the one question that truly matters: What is my dream?
This isn't about a fleeting wish or a casual hope. It’s about that deep, burning desire that sparks within you—the vision that energizes you, the purpose that pulls you forward, and the future you are willing to fight for. It is the starting point of all great achievements, the very root of your personal success tree.
Yes….We all have a dream—a vision of life we truly want to live. But somewhere between childhood and adulthood, many of us let that dream fade into the background. We get caught up in responsibilities, routine, and the noise of everyday life.
Yet, your dream is more than just a wish. It’s your soul’s calling. It’s the thing that lights you up from the inside, that makes you lose track of time, and that gives your life deeper meaning.
The Courage to Dream
In a world that often values practicality over passion, it takes courage to not only have a dream but to acknowledge and pursue it. We are often conditioned to play it safe, to follow the established path, and to let go of our youthful ambitions. Fear becomes a powerful force: the fear of failure, the fear of judgment, and the fear of the unknown.
But as motivational speaker Les Brown reminds us, “Other people’s opinion of you does not have to become your reality.” Your dream is yours alone. It’s a personal blueprint for your life, and only you have the power to bring it to life. The first step on that journey is to give yourself permission to dream, without judgment or reservation.
Finding Your Dream: A Guide to Self-Discovery
If you're unsure what your dream is, here are a few questions to help you uncover it:
1. What would you do if money were no object? Take away the financial constraints and social pressures. If you could spend your time doing anything you wanted, what would that be? This often reveals your truest passions and interests.
2. What problem do you want to solve? Many dreams are born from a desire to make a difference in the world. Is there an issue you care deeply about? An injustice that fuels your passion? This could be the foundation of a powerful dream.
3. What makes you lose track of time? Think about the activities where you are completely absorbed and in a state of flow. This could be anything from writing and painting to coding and building. This state of effortless engagement is a powerful clue to what you are meant to do.
4. What brings you joy? Joy is a powerful indicator of purpose. What activities, conversations, or moments make you feel most alive and fulfilled? The answers to these questions are often closely linked to your deepest aspirations.
From Dream to Reality: The Roadmap for Achievement
Once you have identified your dream, the work is not over; it has just begun. The dream is the starting point, the destination on your map. To get there, you must create a clear roadmap for achievement.
This involves:
1. Setting a Definite Goal: Turn your dream into a specific, measurable goal with a timeline.
2. Creating an Action Plan: Break down your big dream into smaller, manageable steps.
3. Cultivating a Warrior Mindset: Embrace the journey with perseverance, discipline, and a willingness to learn from setbacks.
4. Taking Decisive Action: Don't wait for the perfect moment. As Jack Ma said, "If not now, when?" Start moving towards your dream today.
A Dream Without Action is Just a Wish
Your dream is the seed. Your actions are the water and sunlight. Without consistent effort, your dream will never grow into reality. Take one step today—send that email, sign up for that course, make that phone call.
So I will ask you again What is your dream?
Hold it close, and nature it, chase it with everything you’ve got. Because life is too short to live someone else’s version of happiness. The world needs your unique vision, your talents and your passion.
Your dream is more than just a destination. It's the fuel for a life of purpose, meaning, and fulfillment. It gives you the energy to overcome challenges, the courage to step outside your comfort zone, and the persistence to keep going when others would quit.
So, take a moment today. Pause the routine, silence the noise, and ask yourself that one fundamental question. What is your dream? The answer is waiting to ignite a new, extraordinary chapter of your life.
